The Culpeper Police Department utilizes a variety of items to assist us in the performance of its duties. The following are just some of the items in use now.
LIDAR
The LIDAR is a speed and distance measurement device in use by the Department for the purpose of determining the speed of vehicles on the road. The device does this by bouncing a laser off of the targeted car and registering its speed. The advantage to this instrument is that it's vehicle specific. The LIDAR can also be used to take measurements at an accident scene or crime scene. The Culpeper Police Department employs two of these devices.
In-Car Cameras
The Culpeper Police Department utilizes in car DVD recording systems to record traffic stops, and many other enforcement type situations. All of the vehicles that are assigned to Patrol have a camera installed in it.
Vehicles
The Patrol Divisions use a marked Ford Crown Victoria as its primary vehicle. The cars are equipped with the in car cameras, radar systems, and a variety of equipment in the trunk. The Investigations Section is currently using an unmarked Dodge Intrepid as its means of transporting their equipment.
Motorcycles
The Culpeper Police Department uses the police prepped Harley-Davidson motorcycle to perform the functions of traffic enforcement. The motors are equipped with fixed radar units and the officers carry both the LIDAR and handheld radar units for the purpose of speed enforcement.
Canine
The Department has two canines for the purpose of narcotics detection, tracking, and apprehension. The Department has a chocolate lab that is used for narcotics detection and tracking missing persons. There is also a Belgium malinois in service with the Police Department. It is used to detect narcotics, track suspects, find items discarded, and apprehend suspects.
Parking Ticket Computer
The parking enforcement officer for the Police Department uses a portable computer based of the popular Palm PDA. The computer is capable of tracking and recording ticket/vehicle information. In addition to the portable computer there is a portable ticket printer connected to it that issues the tickets when a violation in determined. The PDA is then linked to a desktop and all ticket/vehicle information is loaded into the computer where it can be tracked and analyzed.
