
WINTER SAFETY TIPS
- Be sure to keep extra supplies on hand in the event that you are homebound for an extended period of time due to severe weather. This includes water, food, and extra batteries.
- For medications, keep an extra month at home.
- Check on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled.
- Ensure that you have a back-up heat source. Use kerosene heaters and generators properly.
- Keep heat sources away from combustible materials such as curtains, bedspreads and rugs.
- Clear sidewalks and steps of snow and ice. Use de-icer or sand.
- Use caution not to over-exert yourself during severe weather, especially when shoveling snow.
- Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite when outside for long periods of time in the cold.
- Dress in loose layers of clothing and a hat to maximize the effectiveness of body heat.
- Keep a battery powered radio or television on hand in the event of power loss.
- Test and change the battery in your smoke alarm.
